Silvia Carvalho

Sílvia Carvalho

Sílvia is a Researcher at the Research Center in Biodiversity and Genetic Resources, BIOPOLIS, Vila do Conde in Portugal. Her current research interests focus on the interface between ecological modelling, systematic conservation planning and evolution. Particularly in developing methodologies and tools to integrate phylogenetic relationships and spatial patterns of genetic diversity into systematic conservation planning. She collaborates on projects related to biogeography and conservation planning across the Mediterranean basin and desert regions.

Virgilio Hermoso

Virgilio Hermoso
(Project Coordinator)

Virgilio is a Senior Researcher at the Estación Biológica de Doñana in Spain. Virgilio's research is centered on the study of ecology and management of freshwater ecosystems with his main interests; are in improving our knowledge on how perturbations affect freshwater biodiversity, identifying the key factors behind its decline and proposing cost-effective ways for addressing its conservation through novel approaches.

Susanne Tanner

Susanne Tanner

Susanne is a Researcher at the Marine and Environmental Sciences Centre at the University of Lisbon. Her core research areas are: (1) modelling and estimating fish population structure and connectivity of different life history stages using natural markers (otolith geochemistry and genetics) and bio-physical modelling, and 2) modelling and predicting the impacts of climate change on growth variability, fish population and marine ecosystem productivity through the development of time series obtained from otolith increment widths (biochronologies).

Arthur Sanguet

Arthur Sanguet

Arthur is a Researcher at the University of Geneva, Department of Botany and Plant Biology.

Miguel Canibe

Miguel Cánibe Iglesias

Miguel is a PhD student at the Universidade de Santiago de Compostela in Spain. His research is focused on the combined effects of global change drivers on biodiversity in fire-prone landscapes, and how remote sensing technologies can contribute to assess said effects.

Aegean Team

Sylvaine Giakoumi

Sylvaine Giakoumi

Sylvaine is a Senior Researcher at Stazione Zoologica Anton Dohrn in Italy. Sylvaine's research focuses on the study of the ecology and management of marine ecosystems. Her main research activity has been focused on addressing ecological questions and incorporating this understanding in the conservation and management of ecosystems.

Stelios Katsanevakis

Stelios Katsanevakis

Stelios is a Professor at the Department of Marine Sciences, Laboratory of Marine Biodiversity and Ecosystems Management, University of the Aegean in Greece. He is a marine ecologist with research interests focusing on; marine conservation and ecosystem-based marine spatial management, in the Mediterranean Sea; marine alien invasions and their impact on biodiversity and ecosystem services;  developing and applying methods for marine monitoring.

Maria Vigo

Maria Vigo

Maria is a Research Fellow at Stazione Zoologica Anton Dohrn in Italy. Her research interests focus on marine ecosystem ecology and ecosystem-based management, particularly on the conservation and restoration of compromised ecosystems. Furthermore, she is involved in systematic conservation planning and assessing the effectiveness of Marine Protected Areas using visual and video techniques, experimental approaches, and telemetry methods.

Vasiliki Markantonatou

Vasiliki Markantonatou

Vasiliki is a marine ecologist, specializing in marine conservation and the sustainable management of marine resources at the University of the Aegean. Her research focuses on monitoring and assessing human footprint on biodiversity components, implementing ecosystem-based management approaches and designing of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs).

Maria Papazekou

Maria Papazekou

Maria Papazekou is a PhD candidate at the School of Biology, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece. Her research centers on Maritime Spatial Planning and spatial prioritization, aiming to optimize resource allocation and enhance strategic conservation efforts. Her interests encompass broader aspects of ecosystem-based marine management, examining the complex interactions between ecological processes, human activities, and the marine environment.

Valentini Stamatiadou

Valentini Stamatiadou

Valentini is a PhD student in the Department of Marine Sciences at the University of the Aegean. Her research primarily focuses on the economic valuation and mapping of marine ecosystem services. She is deeply interested in understanding the various human impacts on coastal environments and actively seek nature-based solutions for their conservation and protection.
